Video Enhancer v1.9.2

Written on 23 September 08 and filed in: Software

Video Enhancer allows you to:

  1. Increase resolution of your video with Video Super Resolution technique which delivers unbelievable quality by using information from previous frames, while all the other resize methods use information from one current frame. Now you can convert your SD video to HD!
  2. Use more than a hundred of VirtualDub filters allowing you to do everything you want with your video: deinterlacing, denoising, deblocking, color correction, deshaking, sharpening, visual effects etc. On multiprocessor systems, dual core or hyperthreading CPUs works a lot faster than VirtualDub because all filters, decoders and coders work in separate threads simultaneously.
  3. Open any video which can be played on your system and re-compress it with any video codec (DirectShow, DMO and Video for Windows) installed in your system.

Walls Without Windows

Written on 24 August 08 and filed in: Microsoft

Microsoft is about to unleash its $300 million Vista marketing campaign. Can negative perceptions be changed?

That’s an answer that can only come from seeing the campaign. Marketing isn’t just enough. Microsoft has to do the right marketing.

According to today’s Wall Street Journal, the advertising campaign will be something like “Windows, Without Walls.” Reverse is the situation now. A bunch of walls stand between potential customers and Vista adoption. Reasons are many, with negative perceptions being high among them.

“Too many enterprise decision-makers are accepting out of hand all of the fear, uncertainty and doubt being proliferated on the Internet by those who do not know about which they speak,” said C. Marc Wagner, a services development specialist at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Crash Course Marketing
Marc rightly identifies real perception problems. Many IT managers I have talked to are satisfied with Windows XP, and they have heard too much about Vista’s compatibility and usability problems. It could take a whole lot of marketing to change widespread negative perceptions, assuming Microsoft can do so effectively.

I’ve got my doubts about what Microsoft can do. According to the Journal, Microsoft is paying Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to appear in some of the advertising. This wouldn’t be Jerry’s first stand-up gig for Vista. Last year, HP featured the comedian in “The Computer Is Personal Again” commercials. In November, Mike Nash, corporate vice president of Windows product management, told me that Microsoft would do more co-marketing campaigns like HP’s.

Newer HP marketing “Crash Course” features Shaun White giving “tips for school and beyond.” I have to laugh. Why would any PC company use “crash” in marketing a Windows PC?

I’m wondering about what’s really coming, when the ad campaign launches, which, according to the Journal, will be in early September. The supposed “Windows, Without Walls” campaign uses comedians, just like HP’s “The Computer Is Personal Again” campaign. Are the Journal’s rumors mixed up? Will Microsoft and HP be working together? Or is Microsoft just lifting ideas from HP’s campaign?

Several of my colleagues called HP’s Jerry Seinfeld ads “silly.” I think they’re OK, but Microsoft would have to do a whole lot better to turn around negative Vista perceptions. The Journal claims the new ads would also feature Microsoft’s semi-retired chairman. Does nobody at Microsoft remember the debacle of putting together Bill Gates with Jon Stewart for the Consumer Electronics Show keynote a few years back? If Jon Stewart can’t make Bill Gates funny, nobody can—not even Jerry Seinfeld.

How do you define “Extreme”? How about as a high-velocity, quad-core processor packed into a mobile platform? That’s what Intel announced this afternoon at the Intel Developers Forum. Heretofore known as Core 2 Extreme, the cat (or chips) are now officially out of the bag.

In July, the first Core 2 Duo Extreme Mobile X9100–a Penryn dual-core CPU–to show up at our labs debuted inside Micro Express’s JFL9290 laptop. The PC World Test Center is still putting that machine through its paces (you can check out our assessment of its little brother, the Micro Express JFL9226, in the meantime), but the initial numbers are impressive. It dominated our WorldBench 6 tests, notching a score of 115 and posting decent frame rates in Doom 3 (47 frames per second at 1024 by 768 resolution, with antialiasing) courtesy of a 256MB nVidia GeForce 9600M GT GPU. The real speed king, though, is the QX9300 (a Penryn Quad Core)–and it’s now out the door, launching this week.

Here’s the breakdown on what they offer. The X9100 has a 3.06-GHz frequency, two cores, and a 6MB cache running at 44 watts. The QX9300 has four cores running at 2.53 GHz, with a 12MB cache at 45 watts.

The new chip’s focus on gaming capability shows up in many ways, starting with the way it emphasizes design choices for dual discrete graphics cards in the system. Another example is the chip’s automatic overclocking of RAM (and DDR3 memory). And don’t forget Intel’s claims of improved I/O read times with the upcoming X18-M and X-25M SATA Mainstream SSDs.

Of course, being “Extreme” means doing extreme things like building overclocking into the BIOS. Good luck if you’re foolhardy enough to try and reach the 4-GHz threshold. (One notebook on display at the IDF show, from Flextronics, managed to hit that number, but only thanks to a specially crafted cooling docking station created by CoolIt Systems.) Still, being able to crank your 3.06-GHz CPU up to 3.59 GHz is feasible with the easy-to-use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, which works inside of the OS. Just make sure to park your tweaked-out laptop on an ice cube or something to keep it cool. (Disclaimer: Overclock at your own risk! Besides voiding warranties, such fate-tempting behavior puts you at risk of corrupting data, burning out the CPU, or worse.)

Intel clearly takes its thermals very seriously. Utilities are available that constantly monitor your hardware…and the chip maker emphasizes that special options such as CoolIt’s MTEC Docking Station are all but essential for hitting the performance ceiling without going splat.

How likely are you to buy that extra-hardcore docking station? And how much will it cost you? Those are good questions, and they should be answered when the base launches in January of 2009–just in time for you to see an even beefier Core i7-based Extreme Edition notebook next year.

Organisations failing to migrate to IPv6

Written on 21 August 08 and filed in: Technology

Migration to the new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) standard is virtually non-existent, according to a year-long study released this week by network security firm Arbor Networks.

Experts and governments have been encouraging organisations to migrate to the new protocol because the current 20 year-old IPv4 is fast running out of available addresses.

IPv4 addresses could in fact run out as early as 2010, according to Scott Iekel-Johnson, principle software engineer at Arbor Networks.

The firm used data from over 80 of its ISP partners and customers to determine the amount of IPv6 traffic on the internet.

Arbor Networks found that the proportions of IPv6 and IPv4 traffic have stayed roughly the same over the past year.

The report also found that IPv6 traffic is still a tiny percentage of overall internet traffic. There were 6Mbps of IPv6 traffic by the end of July compared to 4Tbps of IPv4 traffic.

“There is a lot of concern over how slow it is going,” said Iekel-Johnson. ” We really need the same level of functionality [in network infrastructure] to make IT departments’ jobs more feasible, and ultimately this has to come from the vendors.”

Jay Daley, IT director for .uk registry Nominet, argued that the business case for migration is even stronger for those organisations wishing to sell goods and services into developing countries.

“China, for example, is one of the biggest users of IPv6,” he added. “So at some point your web site will only be accessible by developed countries still using IPv4, and you won’t be able to sell your goods inwardly into developing countries.”

Axel Pawlik, managing director for regional internet registry the RIPE Network Coordination Centre, argued that migration now will grant you more “freedom of movement and planning space”, and probably end up cheaper than delaying until your organisation is forced to move to the new protocol.

Seinfeld to host the Microsoft Makeover

Written on 21 August 08 and filed in: Microsoft

Finally, Microsoft is responding to the long-running “Mac vs PC” advertising campaign and they’re tapping Jerry Seinfeld to be the pitchman. According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft’s $300 million campaign is kicking off with a $10 million bit with Seinfeld.

It’s too early to say whether the ads, set to debut September 4, can effectively counter Apple’s ads featuring the stodgy “PC” guy engaging in friendly, competitive banter with hip “Mac” dude. The campaign is well-established and widely recognized.  Microsoft’s campaign, which the WSJ says will use some variation of the slogan “Windows, Not Walls,” appears to take a jab at Apple’s proprietary hardware and software products - namely the iPod and iTunes - and their inability to play nice with other products.

It’s money well spent for Microsoft, which has seen better headlines in its past. Windows Vista has had some technical shortcomings and critics have not been kind. A good campaign will tackle that perception head-on. At the same time, Apple - which is now seeing its own black eyes over iPhone problems - has picked up slices of market share in recent quarters. And the company’s failed takeover of Yahoo - and subsequent involvement, albeit from the sidelines, in Yahoo’s nasty proxy fight attempt - is the company’s last real public appearance.

We’ll be watching, Microsoft. And so will the guys in Cupertino, possibly to learn a thing or two for a makeover campaign they’ll likely be needing soon.

Microsoft Is Gearing Up for Windows 7 Downloads

Written on 21 August 08 and filed in: Microsoft

Even with Microsoft increasingly opening up on Windows Vista’s successor, the hunger for Windows 7 details is far from being satiated.

This because the Redmond giant, through Steven Sinofsky, senior vice president, Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, continues to be firmly in control of all the information made public. Sill the Windows 7 feast could not be without its crumbs, and the latest example points to Microsoft gearing up for Windows 7 downloads, namely updates for the next iteration of the Windows client, via WSUS, but not only.

According to the screenshot included toward the bottom of this article (courtesy of Yannis), the Windows 7 Client has been added among the products on the list for the Windows Server Update Services. “You can specify the products for which you want to synchronize updates,” reads the message at the top of the dialog box, while a note at the bottom says “all products, including products that are added in the future.” In addition to Windows 7 Client WSUS has also been tailored to serve the Windows Internet Explorer 8 Dynamic Installer. However, as you can see, there is no mention of Windows Server 2008 R2, developed under the codename Windows 7 Server.

Microsoft is not serving updates for Windows 7 yet, and in this regard there are no items that can be synchronized. Still, the next version of Windows is featured on the WSUS list all the same. “Microsoft Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP1 (WSUS 3.0 SP1) enables information technology administrators to deploy the latest Microsoft product updates to computers running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, and Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 operating systems. By using WSUS, administrators can fully manage the distribution of updates that are released through Microsoft Update to computers in their network,” reads Microsoft’s description of WSUS 3.0 SP1 released in March 2008.

The introduction of Windows 7 among the products on the list of operating systems supported by WSUS means nothing for now. Still, it does reveal Microsoft’s intentions to start delivering updates for Vista’s successor even as the platform will be in development, therefore the use of the Windows 7 codename. But in the end, integrating Windows 7 with WSUS is not the sole update-focused initiative from Microsoft. The Windows Serviceability (WinSE) and Windows Update (WU) teams are hard at work on the next generation of the updating infrastructure servicing the Windows platform.

“The WU Tools team is in the very beginning stages of development on a new End-to-End automation and tools suite that will completely change the way the WU team and its customers publish content,” a member of the Windows Update Tools teams revealed.
